Generals 将/帥 (Chinese Chess)

Xiangqi, also known as Chinese chess, stands as a revered traditional board game within Chinese culture. Its roots trace back 1500 years to the North Zhou Dynasty in China. Throughout its history, Xiangqi has garnered widespread popularity among the Chinese populace, owing to its intricate complexity and captivating allure (Xu, 2004).

On the black side, the commanding piece is denoted as 將 (traditional) / 将 (simplified) jiàng, signifying the "general," while on the red side, it is referred to as 帥 (traditional) / 帅 (simplified) shuài, representing the "marshal."

Commencing from the midpoint of the rear edge within the palace, the general embarks on the game. It possesses the ability to move and capture along orthogonal lines, constrained to remain within the palace boundaries. An exception exists to this rule.

When two generals confront each other vertically without any intervening pieces, the "flying general" move can be executed. This maneuver permits the active general to traverse the board to capture the opposing general. In practical terms, arranging this scenario initially would result in a check, hence, such a situation cannot be established.

The term "king," which was initially used to describe this piece, underwent modification to "general" due to Chinese cultural sensitivities. The governing figures of China raised objections to their royal titles being assigned to game components. Despite this alteration, English-speaking players sometimes refer to the general as the "king" due to the shared functionalities of these pieces.
